Originally, the Black Panther party was known as The Black Panther Party for Self-defense. This was an African-American revolutionary left-wing self-defense organization that was active in the U.S. in the Mid-1960's on into the 1970's. They achieved both national and international fame, because of their deep involvement in the black power movement, and also in U.S. politics of the 60's and 70's. They were also known for their intense anti-racism attitude.
Founded in Oakland, California by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton on October 15th, 1966, their original mission was to protect the black neighborhoods from police brutality, but their mission, objectives, and philosophy ended up getting corrupted while the party was in existence, they passionately declared socialist and communist views. And lo and behold they had a newspaper self-titled The Black Panther, which was circulated in 1967, they also marched on the California state capitol located in Sacramento to protest the ban that fell on selected weapons. And by 1968, the party had expanded to 16 major cities like: Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; Philidelphia, Pennsylvania; and New York City, New York, etc. "What we Want, What We Believe" was their moto, they (the Panthers) became the icon of counterculture of the 1960's and oh, get this: they condemned Black Nationalism as "Black Rascism" BIG SHOCKER THERE!!! AM I RIGHT?? And after that turn, their main view-point shifted to socialsim without racial exclusions.
F.B.I director J. Edger Hoover called The Black Panther Party "the greatest threat to the internal security of this country". And after that, Hoover made painstaking efforts with his F.B.I policemen, to get rid of the Party. Eventually, the Black Panthers collapsed altogether in the early 1970's thanks to Hoover's extensive program of surveillance, eavesdropping, infiltration, police harrassment, perjury, and Huey Newton's 1968 manslauther trial.
